From Zoomies to Zzz’s: Doggie Day Care 101

October 3, 2025

If your dog has energy to spare, toys all over the floor, and a look that says, “Is it playtime yet?” they might be the perfect candidate for doggie day care. At The Hydrant, we’ve turned playtime into an art form, offering a full day of fun, enrichment, and socialization in a safe, supervised setting. From heading to work for the day to just wanting to give your pup a break from the same backyard routine, doggie day care gives them a full-blown experience they’ll look forward to (and nap through after).

Key Benefits of Dog Day Care

There’s a reason so many dogs burst through our doors with happy tails and big grins; they know what’s coming. At The Hydrant, doggie day care offers a curated blend of social time, stimulation, and structured rest, all designed to help your pup live their best life.

Socialization

For dogs, play is an essential part of building social skills. At doggie day care, your pup gets to interact with other dogs in a controlled, well-supervised environment. This helps them learn how to communicate, play nicely, read cues, and build confidence around other canines. Our team works hard to match your dog with compatible playmates to ensure a safe and positive experience, no matter if your dog is a social butterfly or still learning the ropes.

Enrichment activities

We like to keep things exciting. That’s why our day care keeps your furry friend engaged with everything from structured group play and fetch sessions to sniff-and-seek games and splash pad adventures. These mentally and physically engaging activities aren’t just a way to burn energy; they help reduce stress, prevent boredom, and leave your dog feeling fulfilled.

Is doggie day care right for your dog?

Most dogs can benefit from day care, but like people, not every pup has the same personality or preferences. If your dog is energetic, curious, and enjoys being around other dogs or people, they’ll likely love the group setting. Dogs who tend to be shy or anxious may still thrive with the proper support and a slow introduction, but we will always take things at your dog’s pace. Our team is trained to spot canine body language cues and ensure every dog has a good time. If your pup prefers solo enrichment or one-on-one attention, we can provide that, too. Think of it as choosing between a group hike or a peaceful walk in the park; either way, we make sure your dog has a good tail-wagging time.

What to Expect on Your Dog’s First Day

Bringing your pup to doggie day care for the first time can feel like dropping your kid off at school: exciting, nerve-wracking, and filled with questions. Don’t worry, we’ve got you both covered.

How to prepare

Before your first visit, we’ll set up a brief evaluation to get to know your dog and determine their ideal play style, energy level, and comfort with others. It’s our way of creating the best environment possible for your dog to have fun safely. Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and arrives on a leash. Bonus points if they’ve had breakfast and a potty break before arriving!

What to pack

No need to bring a suitcase, just your pup, a leash, and any special instructions we should know about (like allergies or medical needs). We provide clean water, shaded rest areas, and tons of toys and activities. If your pup needs food or medication during their stay, we’re happy to accommodate.

How our staff helps new dogs adjust

Every dog is different, and our team knows how to make new arrivals feel at ease. For your dog’s first visit, we’ll keep things low-pressure, introducing them to our environment slowly and thoughtfully. Whether that means observing a group from the sidelines before joining in or engaging in one-on-one time with a team member, we let your dog set the pace.

Common Activities at Doggie Day Care

What’s a day in the life of a doggie day care pup? Think of it as a well-balanced mix of action, attention, and rest. Dogs rotate through different play areas, indoors and out, based on energy level, size, and temperament. They might spend the morning chasing balls, cooling off in the splash pad, or playing tug with new friends. Midday is perfect for a nap in a climate-controlled space, followed by low-key enrichment like puzzles, scent games, or cuddles with staff. We also offer add-on services like training sessions and spa treatments, so you can customize your pup’s day however you’d like.

Doggie Day Care FAQs

Is doggie day care safe for puppies?

Absolutely! At The Hydrant, we welcome puppies if they meet our health and vaccination requirements and are at least four months old. Our team is trained to gently introduce younger pups to the day care environment, ensuring they feel comfortable and safe. We take extra care to group them with playmates of similar size and temperament and provide plenty of breaks and rest time between all the fun.

How often can my dog visit doggie day care?

As often as they’d like! We have many pups who visit a few times a week, and some who come daily. Frequent visits help reinforce routines, deepen social bonds, and create a consistent outlet for physical and mental stimulation. Our Pawesome Perks members especially love the savings that come with frequent visits!

Can aggressive dogs attend doggie day care?

We do our best to create a safe and positive environment for every guest, which means evaluating each dog to ensure they’re a good fit for the group setting. Dogs displaying aggressive or reactive behaviors toward other dogs or people may not be suited for group play, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of options! In many cases, we can work with pet parents to explore individual play sessions, enrichment alternatives, or on-site training to help build confidence and improve behavior.

How many dogs are in the doggie day care group?

We intentionally keep our playgroups small and structured to ensure everyone stays safe and has a great time. Dogs are grouped based on size, temperament, and play style, and each group is always under the close supervision of our experienced staff. While group sizes can vary depending on the day, we prioritize quality interaction over quantity and make sure every dog gets the attention it deserves.
